Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate percentage increase?
Subtract original from new, divide by original, multiply by 100. From 50 to 65: (65 − 50)/50 × 100 = 30% increase.
How do I calculate percentage decrease?
Same formula — the result is simply negative. From 80 to 60: (60 − 80)/80 × 100 = −25% (a 25% decrease).
Why isn't a 50% increase reversed by a 50% decrease?
The base changes. 100 → 150 is +50%, but 150 → 100 is −33.3%, not −50%. Percent change is always relative to the starting number.
What counts as a large percentage change?
Context matters. In finance 5% monthly is big; in weather 20% humidity change is small. Always pair the percent with the absolute difference.
