How to Measure
- Neck — below the Adam's apple, tape horizontal.
- Waist — at the navel, measure during a normal breath.
- Hip (women) — widest part of the hips.
Use a flexible, non-stretchy tape. Measure in the morning for consistency.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the US Navy method?
±3–4% accuracy compared to gold-standard DEXA scans — very reasonable for home tracking. More accurate than BMI for assessing composition.
Where should I measure?
Neck: just below the larynx. Waist: at the navel, relaxed (not sucked in). Hip (women only): widest point of the hips. Stand straight, no flexing.
What's a healthy body fat %?
Men: 10–20% typical; 18–25% average; <10% very lean. Women: 18–28% typical; 25–32% average; <15% very lean.
Why not just use BMI?
BMI can't tell muscle from fat. A lean athlete may score 'overweight' on BMI but have low body fat. Body fat % is a better composition metric.
