Four Formulas, One Honest Range

Most single-number "ideal weight" sites pick one formula and call it truth. We show all four — Devine (1974), Miller (1983), Robinson (1983), and Hamwi (1964) — so you can see a realistic spread rather than a deceptive target.

When to Trust the Result

  • You have average build and moderate muscle mass
  • You're between 5'0" and 6'4"
  • You're not pregnant, elderly, or heavily training

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?

No single formula fits everyone. Devine is used clinically for drug dosing; Miller tends to run slightly higher; Robinson and Hamwi are common in nutrition settings. Look at the average of all four for a realistic range.

Is ideal weight the same as healthy weight?

Not exactly. Ideal weight formulas use only height and sex. Healthy weight is a range (via BMI 18.5–24.9) that also accounts for muscle and frame size.

Do these formulas work for very tall or short people?

They're calibrated for heights between roughly 5'0" and 6'4". Outside that range, treat the result as a rough benchmark, not a target.

Should athletes use ideal weight?

No. Muscular athletes commonly weigh 10–15% above formula ideal weight but carry low body fat. Use body fat % or composition scans instead.
